On August 4, 1306, the seventeen-year-old King Wenceslas III, the last male descendant of the House of Přemyslid, was murdered in Olomouc. His death brought the dynasty to extinction in the male line and closed an era of more than five centuries during which the Přemyslids built the Czech state, consolidated its power, and laid the foundations of institutions that shaped Central Europe. The anniversary of the dynasty’s tragic end commemorates a moment that fundamentally changed the course of Czech history.
The House of Přemyslid was the first Czech royal dynasty, with origins reaching back to the Early Middle Ages.
